TRBA Youth Receives Central Texas Community Service Award
Emily Richter of Lockhart, Texas was recently selected as one of KVUE television’s “Five Kids Who Care”. Each year the ABC affiliate in Austin, Texas conducts a special award program in which 5 youth and 5 adults from the central Texas area are recognized for their volunteer service to the community. Recipients are honored at a special ceremony that is later aired on KVUE TV. Youth winners also receive a $1,000 savings bond.
In recognition of her service, Travis County Judge Biscoe and the commissioner’s court declared April 9, 2002 as “Emily Richter Day”.
Emily is the first 4-H’er to receive this award. A big part of Emily’s community service was rabbit related including taking rabbits into a local nursing home for residents to pet and enjoy, setting up the rabbit petting zoo exhibit at the Star of Texas Fair, donating rabbit meat to low income families in east Austin, donating breeding stock to low income families for backyard meat production, and working with other youth promoting rabbits as a 4-H project. Other recognized activities including growing her hair out and donating it to Locks of Love, a program that makes wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy, and volunteering with Reach Out and Read, a program that promotes literacy through reading to children in medical clinic waiting rooms.
Emily raises and shows California breeding stock and meat pens and is a
member of TRBA, ARBA and the Central Texas Rabbit Club.
