What’s
the Matter With Kids Today?
We attended the TRBA Annual Membership Meeting in July. There weren’t as many adults as usually expected at this important event. There were reports, discussions, elections, information, decisions and interaction between interested rabbit breeders. We were sitting near the front of the room. I went to get a drink for Pat out in the hallway when I noticed a group of youth rabbit exhibitors sitting on the floor. They were talking quietly to each other and playing a word game. I didn’t know any kids were even in the building! I then went to the back of the conference room to talk with a friend. I noticed a few more children (under 12 years old) sitting through out the meeting room. They were listening to the adults conduct this important meeting. Again, I didn’t realize that these adolescents were even in the building.
The youth don’t have the opportunity to vote in TRBA meetings. The adults have the privilege of deciding what will be the best path for the club and all of it’s members. There was a lot of discussion during the meeting about fees charge for youth activities at the State Show. We were very happy to see how much support was given to the youth of the club by its adult members.
I remember how interested I was to begin raising rabbits. Without the help and support of parents and other adults, many kids will not have the opportunities I have had. We have two boys that we raised and helped with their rabbit projects. We hope that all the youth in the world have the chance to develop their interest in rabbits. We realize how important we adults are to the education of our youth. We had great support from our parents when we were young. We tried to encourage our two boys and continue to interact with them as much as possible. We would like to see everyone succeed in life. We hope to see a lot more members and their interested children attend next year’s TRBA State Meeting. The future of the TRBA, ARBA and rabbit raising in general is in our hands.
See you there next year,
