Four smooth, floppy-eared, snow-white rabbits clamber over each other
in a burst of fitful fun. This box figurine was inspired by Peter's
children's bunnies - Bullet and Maggie. Unexpectedly, Bullet gave
birth to six babies, so Maggie had to be rechristened Maggie Boy. Both
rabbits are immortalized in the interior. Peter says, "These
smooth pieces are difficult for me because I really enjoy seeing how
much detail I can get into a carving. But then, whilst the intricately
textured boxes are fun to examine, the smooth ones are a joy to
hold." The HK painters themselves got prolific with 10% of the
pieces, coloring them in multi-colored hues.

Parasols were once more than a shady place out of the sun – during
the 19th century parasols were also love tokens and wedding gifts. It
would have been a grave impropriety for a gentleman to present a
parasol to a lady for whom his intentions were not serious. One of the
most outstanding examples was the parasol presented to Bettina
Rothschild by her fiancé. Made of silk and covered with gauze and
lace, the tips were encrusted with emeralds and gems. These rabbits
use their parasol to try to stay cool despite the effects of global
warming. Ice cream and a cooler also help. The bottle of sunscreen
labeled “Kyoto Tan” refers to the Kyoto protocol, an environmental
treaty to which the US has not agreed. “Ward Hunt” refers to an
Antarctic ice shelf which has broken in two as a result of climate
change. On the interior is a bumper crop of leaves and nuts (and the
artist's signature acorn) from a cob tree. The “124” engraved on
the interior denotes this as the 124th box figurine David Lawrence has
carved for Harmony Kingdom.

Two rabbits stand on a box with the inscription “Perry Bros.,
Dowlish Wake.” This is one of David Lawrence’s favorite cider
farms, where cider is made and bought by the gallon from huge oak
barrels. The apples are priced at “10d. per bushel” – 10d. being
ten pence in Old English currency. “Sweet Coppin” is a variety of
cider apple and also the name of a women’s clog dancing team with
whom David’s Morris Men often dance out. The bird is a kingfisher, a
denizen of the “Somerset Levels” where David lives. The interior
shows a traditional English meal of fish and chips, inspired by an old
song that goes: “Run rabbit, run run run/ Don’t give the farmer
his fun, fun, fun/He’ll get by without his rabbit pie” and
suggests he eat fish and chips instead. This is the 119th piece David
Lawrence has carved for Harmony Kingdom. The mouse holds the artist's
signature acorn.

Smoking

$75.00
“Smoking Section” was
carved by British sculptor Peter Calvesbert in 2006. Hand cast and
tinted in the Cotswolds region of England, this signed and numbered
limited edition box figurine is part of the bawdy Blue Box series. For
mature audiences only!
Approximate dimensions: 2 inches wide x 2.5 inches tall.
S e c r e t
s...................................................................................................................
Peter Calvesbert says that years ago, when the facts of life were
still a little sketchy, the one thing that he did know was that you
had to have a cigarette after sex. Now rabbits have a bit of a
reputation in the breeding department, so he started wondering if
rabbits enjoyed a post coital cigarette, and if so, how many would
they smoke in a lifetime. His box figurine portrays two jaded but
happy bunnies lighting up after another conquest, cigarettes strewn
everywhere. The interior contains an inflatable rabbit and the names
of sex toys named after rabbits. Unrelated to the sex trade is the
inscription GW 25,7,6. After reading about glow worms, Peter went out
at midnight to find some. The female only glows for about a week each
year to attract mates. He found three, the first English glow worms he
had ever seen, so GW is for glow worm and the date 25 July 06.
Peter’s mother told him that when she was a child glow worms were
seen everywhere. The abundance of street and security lighting is
thought to make it extremely difficult for males to spot females,
hence their decline.
